Kniphofia uvaria Glowstick

Data is gathered from our West Grove, Pa., trials (Zone 6a). Southern growers: expect 1-2 weeks earlier finishing. Northern growers: 1 week slower. Consider summertime scheduling accurate. Dates based on a standard 72 liner size.

Notes/Pitfall Management
Best practice would be to grow in a large liner such as a 32 cell for 12 to 16 weeks for bulking. If using 72 cell liners, 3PPP will fill the container more quickly.

Late Spring scheduling only. Growers in the South will have an easier time finishing in Spring than Northern growers. Glowstick is best grown and bulked in a large liner prior to transplanting into gallons. This will reduce time in gallons.

Propagation Guide
Media EC/pH: EC 1.2-1.5 mmhos/pH 5.8-6.2
Soil Temperature: 70-72°F (21-22°C)
Rooting Hormone: 1,000 ppm IBA
Mist: Low
Fertilization: 50 ppm N when roots become visible
Pinching: Not necessary.
Transplanting: 12 weeks after sticking
Comments: May be transplanted sooner than 12 weeks, but bulking in the liner is more efficient than in the finished container.
Finishing Guide
Media pH: 5.8-6.2
Temperature: 68 to 72°F (20 to 22°C)
Light Level (fc): 5,000 to 8,000
Vernalization: No
Daylength: Long day obligate
Watering: Allow media to dry slightly between watering. Overwatering will result in slow bulk.
Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer at a rate of 150 to 175 ppm N. Generally a heavier feeder.
Pinch After Transplant: None
Plant Growth Regulators: PGRs not needed
Pests and Fungal Diseases: Pythium can result from overwatering. Aphids can also be a problem.
